Face Masks: The Perfect Pick-Me-Up

Face masks are an easy way to nourish and revitalize your skin on top of your daily skin regimen. Facials are wonderful, but costly so this is a DIY way to give your complexion the perfect pick-me-up. I do a mask about 1-2 times a week and have found that a lot of my friends aren’t sure which type of mask they should be using for their skin type. Not all face masks are mud or clay. Cream masks are great for people with sensitive or dry skin. Peel-off masks are great for all skin types and usually come in gel form. Here are a few of my favorites for ladies AND gentlemen!

Men’s Skincare Cheat Sheet

For men, shopping for skincare and cosmetic products isn’t as exciting as it is for women. Partly because it’s embarrassing, and partly because it’s confusing and overwhelming. Having two older brothers and (handsome) father, I’ve gotten pretty familiar with the realm of male cosmetics and I wanted to give the gents out there a little go-to guide. Sometimes we forget that products have a shelf life, so start by doing some spring cleaning in your medicine cabinet.

MensSpringMustHaves

1.Self Tanner with Anti-Aging Complex 2. Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash 3. Lip Balm

 4. Razor Burn Relief Ultra 5. Clinique Dark Spot Corrector 6. Double-Duty Face Moisturizer

Don’t let my first product scare you off–a men’s self tanner. It won’t make you orange at all because it’s more of a brightener and moisturizer than anything else. Pasty just really isn’t a good look on anyone. Lip balm is a must, especially during the summer. Protect your lips from getting that infected, crackly look..yuck! Dark spot corrector is going to be your secret weapon. If you can’t wear under eye concealer (if you do I won’t judge you) this is the next best thing for curing those dark circles!

Obsessed: Naked Skin Beauty Balm

I don’t always want to put on a full face of makeup so lately I’m loving Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Beauty Balm ($34). The formula is lighter than a tinted moisturizer and works to restore your skin while you’re wearing it. It gives me a subtle glow and evens out my skin tone without looking too obvious.

Perfect for: Running errands or hanging out in the sun.

Benefits: This cream minimize pores, lines, fine wrinkles, uplifts skin and reduce redness in just 8 weeks. It also has an SPF 20 which is crucial with any moisturizer.

Coral Lips and Cheeks

If you’re wondering where I’ve been, I am wondering the same thing. I’ve been inspired to post, but have been lost in the craziness of my new wonderful job–but I’m back!

I love March for several reasons–A) It is my birthday month B) Everyone is slowly snapping out of their winter blues C) Spring colors are creeping out of hibernation. One of my favorite colors to wear on my cheeks and lips in the spring is Coral. If you want to play it subtle you can pick a lighter shade for a little glow, or you can use it to add a punch to your look when you are wearing white or denim. Decide which shade of coral is best for you-coral/peach or coral/pink.

Chanel’s Frivole ($43).

NARS Orgasm Blush ($29).

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in “Coral Intuitive” ($34).

Lancome L’Absolu Nu in Coral Ribbon ($30).

The Holiday Cheat Sheet

“In this world, it is not what we take up, but what we give up that makes us rich”

-Henry Ward Beecher

At the holidays, my parents have always encouraged my brothers and me to donate to a charity. Last year I chose JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) in honor of my best friend, Taylor, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was in 7th grade. This year, I have chosen Show Your Hearts. This charity helps raise funds for The Berry children, Aaron, Peter and Willa, who lost both of their parents in a tragic car accident that left both of the boys paralyzed from the waist down. What charities inspire you?

1. Marc Jacobs Pretty Nylon Small Cosmetic Case ($88)

2. Michael Kors Golden Oversized Runway Watch ($275)

3. Ali Ro Classic Anorak Jacket ($275)

4. Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses ($130)

5. YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick in “Nude Beige” or “Sensual Silk” ($34)

6.“Tiny Beautiful Things” by Cheryl Strayed ($11)

7. Bare Minerals “The Dream Team” Brush Set ($49)

8. Jennifer Zeuner Mid Size Swirly Initial Pendant ($229)

Obsessed: Voluspa Candles

A house is not a home without great candles. Candles have made my bedroom a personal sanctuary and my safe haven after a crazy day.Throughout college I was partial to lavender candles and I needed one next to my bed at all times. My latest obsession is Voluspa candles and as a result loyalty to lavender has taken a backseat to “Suede Blanc”.  Voluspa’s elegant packaging is easy on the eyes and they burn longer than most brands.

Suede Blanc..slightly resembles the scent of a hot boy. via

Here are some of my faves from Voluspa!

Suede Blanc: They call it “butter leather and rich cedar” but I call this the “hot boy” candle. Don’t knock till you try it.

Laguna: This candle smells like fresh, California air. Not too flowerly and perfect as a bedside candle!

Fresh Cade Lavender: This has the amazing lavender scent with a hint of fresh wood making. Warm and romantic/

Pink Citron: The perfect pick to make you feel girly and glamorous. A great bathroom candle!

Creme de Peche: A vanilla/citrus blend that is fruity without the headache. Great for summer.

Bella Sucre: Flower meets coconut and makes any room feel fresher.

Where to buy: Nordstorm, Bloomingdales, Anthropologie, Amazon, Voluspa.com

Outsmarting Black Friday

With your food hangover still lingering, the thought of going out and fighting the ruthless Black Friday crowds is unbearable. Don’t expect to find me waiting in line at 8am because I won’t be there. I’ll be on my couch in my satin leopard pajamas shopping from the comfort of my own home. I recently discovered Lockerz, a site that makes online shopping SO easy. Think of it as a Shoppable Pinterest.

Create your profile and start searching around to find fabulous items to post to your “boards”. Here’s the best part: You can earn PTZ, which give you discounts in the Lockerz shop. The Lockerz Shop features amazing brands like 7 For All Mankind, BCBG and Splendid. You can also shop directly from your favorite images because the site connects directly to online favorites such as NastyGal, Urban Outfitters, Amazon, Shopbop and FreePeople.

Use my custom code HANNAHFRIDAY and get 50-80% off your purchase from the Lockerz shop

The Sweet After the Storm

I blinked and BOOM it’s Halloween! Halloween is one of those holidays that tickles my inner-child and reminds me of a time when picking my costume or which neighborhood to trick-or-treat in was the heaviest debate on my mind. In Westport, Compo Beach or Gault Avenue were the cool places to go on Halloween, especially if you wanted to bump into your crush. It was a big deal to see crushes outside of school because A. They couldn’t know they were your crushes and B. Co-ed hangouts were rare, supervised or too awkward. My hometown of Westport was one of the towns painfully struck by Hurricane Sandy’s wrath and it breaks my heart to think that Halloween memories like my own may be tainted for Little Westporter’s this year.

I hope that buried somewhere in Sandy’s mess Little One’s all along the east coast can dig out their Halloween spirit and properly celebrate. As for the rest of us, of course, I say we all celebrate too. But more importantly I say we use this disaster as a chance to swim out from under our petty issues and remove our masks of judgement. I hope that we can keep the sweetness of Halloween all year long.

Of course, I would never leave you all without a little goodness to go home with. If you don’t have the curly mane to be Foxy Cleopatra from Austin Powers you can still get all up in the gold sass with NARS Cream Blush in Gold Member ($28). I pat a little bit right under my cheek bones or right under my brow for a little glow. You can put it on your cheeks alone or over your normal blush. Enjoy!

Burst with Beauty All Year Round

“Autumn, the year’s last, loveliest smile.” William Cullen Bryant

Just when I was starting to accept that autumn in LA would never come to be, it did! Pumpkin Spice lattes have come out of hibernation and brick reds, deep purples and dusty grays have replaced neon nails. Despite the 70 degree weather, Californians need their fix of chunky scarves, cinnamon candles and leather boots just as much as East Coasters do. We all need fall. We need this season hold our hand and walk us through the end of 2012 and into the start of 2013. We need the warm colors, the crisp air and the aromatic familiarity to make us feel alive and inspired just before winter strips everything bare. It’s a grand finale! Like a team of kick line dancers, mother nature bursts into autumn foliage and gives us everything she’s got. We should take a page out of Mama N’s book and finish off 2012 with even more oomph than we started it with. Revisit those resolutions you swept under the rug, wear a crazy lipstick, take a pole dancing class, get a new-do…just remember, there is no such thing as an understated grand finale.

Autumn in my hometown of Westport, CT!

It’s easier to accept the change of seasons once you master the art of a year round summer glow.  Some smell, some streak and some DO make you look like an orange monster but not all. Here are some keepers.

1. St. Tropez Bronzing Moose. This is my #1 absolute favorite. I swear by this stuff and use it several times a week. You can put it on right under makeup, it dries quickly and it doesn’t smell or streak. AHHHMAZING. (Available at Sephora)

2. Clarins Intense Bronze Self Tanning TintThis guy gives you instant color that lasts for days!

3. Lorac Body Bronzing Gradual Self Tanner. This one has a lovely vanilla fragrance and acts an immediate bronzer as well as a long lasting tanner.

4. Josie Marin Argan Self Tanning Cream. This 100% organic option also repairs and tones the skin while giving you an instant boost of color.

5. Clinique Self Sun Body Tinted Lotion. Perfect for anyone new to self tanning or with fair skin who want to play it safe but still look fab.
